A 35-year-old woman died after her husband allegedly poured petrol on her and set her ablaze at her parental home in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district, police said.

The woman, identified as Pooja, suffered burns over nearly 80% of her body and died on Tuesday while being taken to a higher centre in Bikaner for treatment. Her husband, Sultan Ram, 40, was also injured in the incident and is undergoing treatment at a district hospital, police said.

Circle officer of Sri Ganganagar Vishnu Kumar Khatri said the incident took place around 2.30am on Monday.

According to the complaint, Pooja had been staying at her parental home for around three months following repeated disputes with her husband. Police officers said Ram allegedly entered the house through the terrace, went to the room where Pooja was sleeping and poured petrol over her before setting her on fire. He then fled on a motorcycle.

Police said the couple had been married for around 15 years and had three daughters. The woman’s family has alleged that Ram frequently assaulted her and suspected her of having an extramarital relationship.

Police recovered a five-litre petrol can allegedly used in the crime from the spot.

Based on the initial complaint by the woman’s brother, an attempt to murder case was registered with the Sadar police station, which was converted into a murder case after her death. police said.
