The government on Tuesday told Parliament that it was unaware of the whereabouts of gangster Dawood Ibrahim.
"The UN Security Council has also issued a special notice against him. The subject has not been located so far. Extradition process with regard to Dawood Ibrahim would be initiated once the subject is located," minister of state for home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary told Lok Sabha in a written reply.
Here are the 10 facts to know about Dawood Ibrahim:
-Born on December 26, 1955 to a police head constable in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra; belongs to the Konkani Muslim community.
-Believed to have started his career in crime in the Karim Lala gang, which was once active in Mumbai. Turned to ‘hawala’ trade to expand his business empire, later began arms smuggling.
-After shifting to Dubai, started his D-Company, believed to be one of the largest organised crime syndicates in south east Asia. His business empire straddles UAE, India and Pakistan.
-Organised and financed the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts; became India’s most wanted man.
-Dawood's daughter, Mahrukh Ibrahim, is married to the son of former Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad.
-Was declared a “global terrorist” in 2003 by the US; believed to have close links with al-Qaeda.
-Also on the wanted list of Interpol; in 2011 he was on the number 3 position in the Forbes’ world’s top 10 most dreaded criminals list.
-Known to love the good life, Dawood was once a prominent face in Sharjah, seen rubbing shoulders with the high and mighty during India-Pakistan cricket matches.
-Once even linked to Bollywood actress Mandakini besides other people from tinsel town.
-Has several films based on his life including Company, D, and D Day; there are reports that he had financed many films in Mumbai
