“MGNREGA is a scheme which will be strengthened. We will not do anything to dilute it,” Singh said on the occasion of the 10th Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) Divas.

Allaying the concerns of states that the Centre was inclined towards limiting the scheme, Singh said the government had no such plans and would make all attempts to ensure uninterrupted flow of funds to the states.

Noting that the scheme had helped check distress migration from rural to urban areas, he said it was time to take the scheme forward and include skill training under its purview.

“We are talking about creation of quality assets and physical infrastructure but why don’t we have human assets under MNREGA?” he asked.

Singh said the government did not want to keep MNREGA workers unskilled labourers forever and efforts would be made to turn them into skilled ones.

Earlier, some states slammed the Centre for fund crunch in the scheme.
