Sanjaya Baru hinted at and now Natwar Singh has confirmed it — government files were shown to Congress president Sonia Gandhi when Manmohan Singh was the PM.
In his new book, One Life is Not Enough, former external affairs minister Natwar Singh not only reinforces what Baru, a former media adviser to Manmohan Singh,
said in his book released days before elections but goes a step further. Gandhi was briefed on government files by the PM’s principal secretary, Baru wrote, but
Natwar claims the files were shown to her.
In an exclusive interview to Karan Thapar for Headlines Today, Natwar also said that Gandhi’s control over the Congress was absolute and there was no challenge.
In Accidental Prime Minister, Baru had quoted Manmohan as saying that two centres of power could not work, and he had accepted that ‘the party president (Sonia Gandhi) is the centre of power’. The government, he said, was accountable to the party. While HT is yet to read Natwar’s book, which hits the stands on August 1, he appears to have confirmed the power equations during the UPA’s rule.
Reached for his reaction, Baru said he had not read Natwar’s book and would not like to say anything till he had done so.
