Unsure about Sri Lankan cuisine, we let the Chef Tomadura Publis Silva decide the meal for us. This 76-year-old chef recommended the Gal Curry for vegetarians — red pumpkin and potatoes cooked in buttermilk (R720) — and Devilled Mutton (R870) for the others.

The curry is deliciously flavoured with cinnamon. The Devilled Mutton is bound to make a glutton of you. Also try the Dhal Mullam at R750, and the Isso Kirata — tiger prawns with a distinct Konkan flavour (R1,500). The festival is on till September 30, at The Spice Route, The Imperial, Janpath.
