After being ousted in doubles, the 34-year-old winner of 14 ATP doubles crowns announced he was ending his career. He farewell lacked the Arthur Ashe Stadium sendoff Grand Slam champions Sampras and Chang enjoyed.

Tarango's rant against umpire Bruno Rebeu and his wife Benedicte slapping the French official, were the talk of the All-England Club eight years ago.

Ginepri in Driver's seat

NEW YORK, Aug 29 (AFP) - Robby Ginepri, the 20-year-old American tennis prodigy who is dating British actress Minnie Driver, will face Todd Martin in the third round of the US Open here Saturday.

Ginepri, whose next foe and girlfriend are the same age at 33, joins fourth seed Andy Roddick as one of the next US tennis hopes. Roddick is also dating a Hollywood actress, Mandy Moore.

Ginepri, ranked 40th in the world, ousted South Africa's Wayne Ferreira 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (0/7), 6-2, in his second-round match.

"It's pretty exciting for me," Ginepri said. "I have never advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam. It's a big match for me. I'm fired up."

Jennifer Capriati is wondering how time could fly past so fast.

The 27-year-old American sixth seed, a former child prodigy, was stunned when she realized that she is among the elder statesman in women's tennis.

"It's like, 'Where did all the time go?'" Capriati said. "I don't feel 27. I certainly don't act it all the time."

Capriati was burned out at age 19 and took a 15-month break from the game. But she feels that rising teen stars like Russian 16-year-old Maria Sharapova should not be limited by the WTA to 10 tour events as they now are.

"It's not like it's a bunch of hoopla," Capriati said. "Let her play."
