The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) plans to install underground ducts in the smart city area, freeing it from overhead cables and electric lines.
The corporation, which plans to launch its operation in the Biyabani area, will also pass stormwater drainage lines and drinking water pipelines through these ducts. Measuring 3x3 feet, they will be installed four feet below the surface.
“We are doing this on a pilot basis in Biyabani, where most civic supply lines are in a dilapidated condition,” said city mayor Malini Gaud. As this was a new technology, the success of the project in Biyabani was crucial for its replication in the rest of the smart city, she added.
The 742-acre smart city comprises Rajwada, Satha Bazaar, Bada Sarafa and Chota Sarafa. As it is a very congested neighbourhood, replicating the model across its expanse will be a real challenge. Overhead cables and electric lines are often blamed for defacing the city’s appearance. Electric and transformer poles further congest the areas, obstructing free flow of traffic.
“As we cannot expand the narrow streets by much, we have to devise new plans to make optimum use of the space available,” a technical advisor to the mayor said on the condition of anonymity. “Clearing the entire area of messy overhead cables is a costly affair, but it will be beneficial in the long run.”
In the current system, municipal corporations have to dig up roads and identify the fault each time there’s a problem with an underground line – incurring huge costs. Once the ducts are installed, fixing faults will become an easy and inexpensive affair, the official said.

{{/usCountry}}The plan is being executed on either side of the 1.4-kilometre stretch between Mhow Naka and Narsingh Chouraha in Raj Mohalla, he explained. “The ducts will be introduced at regular intervals of 20 to 30 feet on both sides of the road. Implementing the plan will cost around `8 crore.”
Later, a technical study of other areas in the smart city would be conducted to explore ways to replicate the model.
