Tremors, loud noises create panic in Ratlam villages

The villagers rushed out of their houses fearing for the worst, however, no loss of life was reported.

According to officials, the loud noise was first heard at 8:10 am in Gunawad village, about 35 kilometres north east of district headquarters, and Amleti village, about 30-kilometre south west of district headquarters.

About six hours later at 2:29 pm, villagers in Gunawad once again heard the loud rumbling from beneath the earth.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, revenue inspector Rajesh Chouhan said though the incident created panic among the residents, no loss of life or damage to property in any part of the district was reported.

In-charge sub-divisional magistrate Rashmi Shrivastava confirmed reports of tremors being felt in the two villages. Shrivastava said about two years back, a similar incident occurred in the Bilpnak region.

At the time, experts from the geological department had said it was because of structural disturbances caused under the earth by the rains during monsoon. She said that she was trying to contact an expert from the geological department, Ujjain, to get greater clarification of the reason for the tremors.
