Sofa forms the most significant furniture in the living space and is the most used furniture piece, after your bed. There is a wide range of sofa styles available today, varying from sectional sofas, sofa-cum-beds, chaise lounges, modern sofas, traditional diwan seatings and many more options and to help us with a cheat code, we got a few home interior decor experts to share tips for selecting the perfect sofa.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Priyanka Singh, Director at VO Living, asserted that comfort is the key. She said, “An upholstery sofa with bold colour will add elegance and style to your space. Fabrics that are easy to clean and durable sofa are the styling solution to personalise your space.”
Sajal Lamba, Co-Founder and Director of Wriver, suggested, “More than the aesthetics, the essential feature to keep in mind while designing or selecting any piece is that the hips should be aligned with the knees and ideally at a 90-degree angle while sitting on the couch. The current options offer a wide range of upholstery and material options ranging from leather, linen, velvet etc. However, the cushioning is crucial, which should ideally be made with foam to make for a firm seat and softback. Such a detail will avoid stress on the body and offer long-term comfort.”
According to Anupriya Sahu, Founder and Design Head at MP's Alankaram, before embarking on the research for a new sofa, one must not forget to take the accurate on-site floor plan measurements as it is a fool-proof way of checking if the desired furniture will fit in the space. Moreover, taking dimensions of the doorway clearance is also important to analyse for the safe arrival of the sofa.
She said, “It is advisable to consider the quality of the sofa as good quality furniture is a visible indicator of well-curated design. Additionally, the sofa's upholstery is an essential element that must be considered while buying one. If the sofa is to be put in an area with kids and pets, it is preferable to select medium or heavy use fabric. Sofas occupying high traffic areas such as living or family rooms will require durable fabrics, while those in places like bedrooms, living rooms or guest rooms, which are not exposed to much wear and tear, can sport any type of textile. Lastly, the use of zips and removable covers in the upholstery helps in maintenance and change of looks.”
