I have realised that choosing between liquid and bullet lipstick is less about which one is better and more about what I need on a particular day. Here is how I compare the two and how I decide which one to pick.

Liquid lipstick: Long-lasting colour

Liquid lipstick usually comes in a tube with an applicator wand. I apply it directly to my lips, and depending on the formula, it can dry down to a matte, satin or glossy finish. Matte liquid lipsticks are particularly popular because they can stay on for several hours.

Benefits of liquid lipstick

Long-lasting: I reach for liquid lipstick when I know I will not have much time for touch-ups.

Highly pigmented: Most liquid formulas give me intense colour in just one or two swipes.

Transfer-resistant: Once a good formula sets, it usually transfers less than a traditional creamy lipstick.

Defined finish: The applicator helps me create a neat lip shape, especially when I use a lip liner first.

Wide range of finishes: I can choose from matte, velvet, metallic, satin and glossy textures.

Good for occasions: For weddings, parties or long workdays, I prefer a liquid formula when longevity is my priority.

Bullet lipstick: My everyday favourite

Bullet lipstick is the traditional lipstick that comes in a twist-up tube. It is the formula I find easiest to apply when I want a quick pop of colour without spending too much time on my makeup.

Unlike many liquid lipsticks, bullet formulas often have a creamier texture. They can range from sheer and balmy to highly pigmented and matte.

Benefits of bullet lipstick

Comfortable to wear: Creamy bullet lipsticks usually feel more comfortable on my lips, particularly during long days.

Easy application: I can apply them directly from the bullet without needing a separate applicator.

Quick touch-ups: Carrying one in my handbag makes reapplication simple.

Hydrating options: Cream, satin and balm-like formulas can help my lips feel soft.

Buildable colour: I can apply one layer for a subtle tint or add more for stronger pigmentation.

Easy to remove: Most traditional bullet lipsticks come off more easily than long-wearing liquid formulas.

Liquid vs bullet lipstick: Which one should I choose?

For me, the decision comes down to my routine and the occasion.

I choose liquid lipstick when I need a long-lasting and richly pigmented colour payoff that lasts for several hours. I usually prefer wearing a liquid lipstick whenever I am attending a wedding, party or long event that requires frequent touch-ups, with a transfer-proof formula.

I choose bullet lipstick when I want something comfortable for everyday wear, when I'm not worried about my frequent touch-ups, whether it's for casual dining or a day at work. As these are nourishing and moisturising, and most of them have a creamy formula, I usually prefer bullet lipsticks whenever my lips feel dry.

My final verdict

I would not choose one over the other because both have a place in my makeup bag. Liquid lipstick is my go-to when I want intense colour and staying power, while bullet lipstick wins when I want comfort, convenience and easy reapplication.

For everyday makeup, I usually lean towards a comfortable bullet formula. But when I have a long day ahead and do not want to keep checking my lipstick, I reach for a liquid lipstick.
