The answer is not to reject progress, but to reconnect with values that have guided people for generations.

Modern life has brought remarkable progress. Technology has made everyday tasks faster, information is at our fingertips, and opportunities have expanded in ways previous generations could hardly have imagined. Yet, despite these advances, many people still struggle with stress, loneliness, anxiety and the feeling that they are never doing enough.

The answer is not to reject progress, but to reconnect with values that have guided people for generations. According to Sant Birender Singh Ji Maharaj, spiritual living can offer simple lessons about finding peace, purpose and meaning in a fast-moving world.

1. Your achievements do not define your worth

Modern society often measures success through promotions, possessions, status and popularity. But true success also requires peace and tranquility in your life. Without them, achievements can lose much of their meaning.

You live in a world of instant messages, quick opinions and immediate reactions. Spirituality encourages you to slow down and reflect before responding.

A few moments of silence can prevent unnecessary conflict, strengthen relationships and help you see a difficult situation more clearly. Silence can also be a powerful practice in itself. Sometimes, remaining quiet can help you achieve things that words cannot.

There is a deeper spiritual idea behind this. While you need to speak when communicating with the world, meeting the Satguru, or God, is understood as requiring inner silence and stillness.

3. Compassion is a strength, not a weakness

Forgiveness is another important lesson of spiritual living. One spiritual teaching says that if you forgive others' mistakes, God will forgive your own.

It is often easier to forgive yourself for your own mistakes than to forgive someone else for theirs. Holding on to anger and jealousy can keep you trapped in emotional pain. Forgiveness, on the other hand, can bring a sense of freedom and peace.

True happiness does not come from punishing someone for their mistakes. It can come from finding the strength to let go.

4. What you give to the world eventually returns to you

Every thought, word and action can leave an impact. Whether you understand this as karma or simply as the natural consequences of your choices, the message is similar: your actions shape the kind of world you experience.

If you give respect, honesty and kindness, those qualities can influence the people and situations around you. You should therefore ask yourself what you are putting into the world and what you hope to receive from it.

Think of yourself as carrying a bag filled with what you have accumulated over time. If that bag contains hatred, condemnation, backbiting, lust, deceit and ego, those are the qualities you are likely to carry through life. Instead, try to fill it with patience, modesty, forgiveness, humility, gentleness, love and wisdom.

5. Inner peace is the greatest success

From childhood into adulthood, you may spend years believing that happiness is waiting for you somewhere in the future. First, a good education will bring happiness. Then you may believe that a successful career or business will finally give you peace. Later, you may look toward marriage, children, their education and their future as the next milestones that will complete your life.

The goal keeps moving, and you can spend your entire life waiting for the next achievement without ever feeling truly at peace.

Spiritual living offers a different perspective. Happiness and peace can be found in learning to stop, be present and appreciate the life you have now. The story of Alexander the Great is often used to illustrate this idea. He became king at the age of 20 and had conquered much of the known world by his early 30s. Yet his life ended at a young age, leaving his ambitions and possessions behind.

The lesson is not that planning for the future is wrong. Planning is necessary, but you should not become so focused on tomorrow that you lose sight of today. No one knows how much time they have, which is why living with honesty, spirituality, meditation and awareness of the present moment can be so meaningful. A traditional reflection on life captures this idea: there is celebration when a person is born, and one day there will be mourning at their funeral. Between those two moments, how you choose to live matters.
