Five days of salty hair, sun-kissed skin, turquoise water, beachside cafes and nights that make you forget what time it is.
South Sri Lanka in October was like a dream. Beaches, sunsets, slowing down intentionally and a newfound love for the ocean. Mornings began with the sound of waves, afternoons were for doing absolutely nothing, and evenings somehow turned into long dinners by the beach.
From the charming streets of Galle Fort to surfing in Weligama, watching the sunset in Koggala and dancing barefoot by the ocean, every place has a different mood.
If you love beaches, good food, water activities and a little nightlife, South Sri Lanka has plenty to offer. And the best part? You can explore several coastal towns in five days without rushing through every experience.
This is how I planned my five days along the southern coast, with a few practical tips to help you make the most of your trip.
Before You Go: A Few Things I Wish Every Traveller Knew
1. Don't rush to explore Colombo after landing
When you land at Bandaranaike International Airport, you might feel tempted to explore Colombo straight away. But here's something worth knowing: the airport is in Katunayake, about an hour from central Colombo. If your main plan is to explore the southern beaches, I would skip the city on arrival and head straight to Talpe/Ahangama instead. The drive takes around 2-3 hours, depending on traffic.
Personally, I'd rather spend those extra hours by the ocean than sit in traffic after a long flight. You can always keep Colombo for the end of your trip if you have time.
2. Getting around is easier than you think

2. Getting around is easier than you think
{{/usCountry}}You don't need to plan every little movement in advance.
For longer journeys, a pre-booked driver makes life easier, especially if you're travelling with friends or carrying luggage. For shorter distances, tuk-tuks are a fun and convenient option.
One small tip: always agree on the fare before starting your ride. It saves you from awkward conversations later.
3. Carry some cash, but don't exchange everything at once
Keep some Sri Lankan rupees handy for tuk-tuks, small cafes and local shops. You can exchange money at the airport or authorised exchange counters in town.
Compare the rates before exchanging a large amount, and check whether your bank or card offers a better deal. Carrying a mix of payment options is always a good idea.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Talpe & Weligama Beach Nightlife:Transit time: 2.5 hours from CMB Airport.
- 4:00 PM - Check-in at Talpe: Talpe is a lovely place to start if you want a quieter coastal base. It sits between Unawatuna and Ahangama, making it convenient for exploring other beach towns.
- Don't feel pressured to fit in too much on your first day. Walk along the shore, find a little cafe and let yourself settle into the holiday.
- Late Evening - Weligama Beach Party: Once the sun goes down, make your way to Weligama. The mood changes here. Beach cafes, music, travellers and open-air venues give the town a lively feel. Depending on the night, you may find anything from relaxed drinks by the water to DJs and dancing.
My suggestion? Don't spend the whole evening looking for the perfect party. Find a place with good music, order something you enjoy and let the night unfold.
Little tip: Check the venue's schedule before heading out, as music and party nights can vary by day.
Day 2: Galle Fort Sunset & Coastal Nightlife: Focus: Heritage, local shopping, and dining.
- Morning - Talpe Beach: Spend a relaxed morning exploring Talpe’s coral reef strips and beachside cafes.
- 3:00 PM - Galle Fort Exploration: Drive 20 minutes west to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle Fort. Walk through the cobblestone alleyways filled with boutique shops, artisanal jewellery stores, and handicraft markets offering reasonable rates.
- 6:00 PM - Rampart Sunset: Position yourself along the western fort walls near the lighthouse for one of the finest sunset views on the island.
- Night - Dinner & Ahangama Parties: Grab dinner at one of the fort’s courtyard cafes, then head to Ahangama or Weligama for late-night beach venues. (Hakuna Matata Ahangama, Trax, Lamana)
Day 3: 6:00 AM Snorkelling, Marine Life & Mirissa VibesBeat the midday sun to avoid extreme heat exposure.
- 5:00 AM - Early Snorkelling: Start early to avoid intense UV rays and harsh tan lines. Snorkelling trips take 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Expect to see colourful coral life and sea turtles.
- Dolphin Watching Alternative: For those skipping water sports, opt for a boat cruise out into deeper waters for dolphin watching (typically under 5,000 INR / $50 USD per person).
- Afternoon - Rest: Ocean activities in tropical heat are draining. Take a 2-hour midday nap at your hotel.
- 5:30 PM - Koggala Beach Sunset: Drive 10–15 minutes to Koggala Beach for a calm sunset view.
- Night - Mirissa Beach Cafes: Head to Mirissa for dinner. The beach is lined with candlelit, open-air aesthetic cafes offering live acoustic sets and ocean views. (Salt cafe, Lava Mirissa, and many more.)
Day 4: Dawn Turtles, Surfing & Beach Pool PartyUnawatuna sunrise & active ocean sports.
- 5:00 AM - Unawatuna Turtle Watching: Head to Unawatuna Beach at first light. Giant sea turtles swim close to the shore in calm morning waters. They are harmless, and enjoy swimming alongside them respectfully.
- 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM - Surfing Lesson: Weligama and Unawatuna offer ideal beginner-to-intermediate break points. Sign up for a quick land-training session followed by standard wave practice.
- Afternoon - Chill Out: Surfing works every muscle group. Plan zero activities for the afternoon; lounge by your BnB or hotel pool.
- 7:00 PM - Beach Pool Party: Wrap up the day at an oceanfront pool venue around Weligama.
Day 5: Hiriketiya Swings, Shopping & Jungle Party: 1.5 hrs drive from Talpe.
- Morning to Midday - Hiriketiya Beach: Head to Hiriketiya. Known for iconic palm tree rope swings along the sand, ideal for photography and short video edits.
- Afternoon - Shopping Hubs: Explore Hiriketiya’s main road markets for beachwear, linen outfits, and local souvenirs.
- Night - DJ & Jungle Parties: Hiriketiya is famous for its late-night jungle parties and beachside DJ setups that run until dawn.
What to Pack for Sri Lanka
Skincare and sun protection
The Sri Lankan sun can be harsher than you expect, especially when you're spending hours at the beach, surfing or snorkelling.
- Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30–50+ sunscreen before heading outdoors. Reapply as directed on the label, especially after swimming or sweating.
- Carry aloe vera gel or a gentle moisturiser to soothe dry skin after a long day in the sun.
- Pack a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses and a lightweight cover-up for extra protection.
- Rinse off salt water after swimming and stay hydrated throughout the day.
My biggest tip: Don't underestimate the tropical sun. A little extra care with sunscreen can save you from painful sunburn and help you enjoy every day of your trip.
What to wear and carry
Footwear: Flat sandals, slides and comfortable walking shoes will serve you better than heels. Galle Fort's cobbled streets and sandy beach paths are not the easiest places to walk in them.
Day bag: Carry sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, a towel, sunglasses and a change of clothes if you're planning water activities.
Evening bag: A small crossbody bag is convenient for dinners and parties. Keep your belongings secure, and carry only what you need.
What to eat in Sri Lanka
Don't leave without trying local food. Vegetable kottu is a great option if you enjoy savoury, spicy meals. It's made with chopped roti, vegetables and spices, and is often cooked on a hot griddle.
You'll also find plenty of cafes and restaurants serving pizza, pasta, curries and other familiar dishes along the southern coast.
If you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, ask about ingredients before ordering. Some dishes contain eggs, dairy, fish or seafood even when they look plant-based.
A Few Things to Remember Before You Go
- Don't overpack your itinerary. Distances may look short on a map, but traffic and beach conditions can affect your plans.
- Check the season and sea conditions. Surfing, snorkelling and swimming are weather-dependent, and conditions can vary between beaches.
- Book water activities carefully. Choose reputable operators and follow local safety advice.
- Keep your plans flexible. A beach holiday is much more enjoyable when you don't feel rushed all the time.
- Enjoy the small moments. A good meal, a quiet morning walk or an unexpected conversation can become your favourite memory.
The best part of South Sri Lanka?
It's the variety.
One day, you're wandering through the old streets of Galle Fort. Next, you're trying to stand on a surfboard, watching turtles from a respectful distance or sitting at a beach cafe long after dinner is over.
You can make the trip adventurous, social, slow or a little bit of everything.
And that's what makes five days along the southern coast so special. You don't need to do everything. You just need enough time to find a few places that make you want to stay a little longer.
I realised pretty quickly that Sri Lanka was not the kind of trip where I wanted to keep checking the time. Between getting into the ocean, spending hours by the beach and heading out for dinner at night, the days seemed to pass much faster than expected. I came back with a tan, a camera full of pictures and the feeling that five days were simply not enough.
