Highlighting the work done by his government in the past five years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged the middle class to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and warned they would have to suffer high taxes, inflation and corruption if the Congress comes to power.

Speaking at an election rally at MMRDA grounds in Bandra-Kurla Complex, Modi made an apparent reference to BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur’s controversial remarks on former Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare, asserting it is only the BJP that respects martyrs. “Criticising policemen had become fashionable, without realising that they work 24x7 for us, whether it is a festival or not. It was our government that built a memorial respecting policemen who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. So far, 33,000 have died in the country,” he said.

The PM’s rally was his first in the city and last in Maharashtra ahead of the last phase of elections on April 29 in the state — all the remaining 17 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra will be covered in the fourth phase. Modi was accompanied at the rally by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and Republican Party of India (RPI) chief and Union minister Ramdas Athawale, along with senior leaders of the party, including chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

“Whenever the Congress has come to power, they have left the middle class to suffer with inflation, corruption and taxes. In contrast, our (BJP’s) policy is totally different. There was no corruption in the past five years. After electing me in 2014, I have brought corrupt leaders to the doors of jail. Elect me in 2019, we will put them in jail,” Modi said, without naming any politician. The middle class makes up a significant number of the electorate in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) , which covers 10 Lok Sabha seats.

Modi said his was the only government that has done so many developmental works without increasing taxes. “Only the BJP government has taken families having annual income of ₹5 lakh out of the income tax bracket. The inflation rate was 10%, which was brought down to 4%. The middle class is now saving more money,” he said.

The PM also said Mumbai earlier had a feeling of helplessness, which had now been resolved. “Mumbai never stops, be it the 26/11 attacks or any other attack. But (earlier) they had to live with a feeling of helplessness. But now you have to come to know, that Modi will reply in their (terrorists’) language. We kill them by entering their houses, if they cause any harm to us,” Modi said, without referring to the Balakot air strike.

No unity among opposition: Uddhav

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said the Opposition has no unity. “We are fighting unitedly, but there is no unity among the Opposition. Has anyone seen Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar campaign together? It may be because Pawar doesn’t want to share the stage with Gandhi,” he said.

Clarifying his decision on joining hands with the BJP, he said it was the need of the hour.
