A day after Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra signalled that her party would not hurt the prospects of SP-BSP alliance candidates, BSP president Mayawati and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday alleged that both the Congress and the BJP had a tacit understanding for Lok Sabha elections.
Both the leaders said there was no difference between the two parties and both were working against the SP-BSP alliance in UP. Addressing a press conference, Mayawati said: “The Congress leaders have appealed to party supporters that even if the BJP candidates win the election, they should ensure the defeat of the Alliance candidate.”
She alleged that the Congress leaders had a casteist mindset and the party had fielded candidates on majority of Lok Sabha seats to benefit the BJP.
“The Congress and the BJP do not want that people who have been victims of casteism, communalism and capitalism to come to power at the Centre and in states. The BSP believes that both the parties are cast in the same mould,” she said.
Addressing a public meeting in Barabanki on Wednesday, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had said both Mayawati and Akhilesh were under pressure from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Both the parties have the history of bowing to the pressure of the BJP. There is no pressure of Modi on me,” he said.
Talking to media persons in Amethi on Wednesday evening, Priyanka said the Congress candidates would not cut the votes of Alliance nominees.
“Congress has fielded candidates who can win the election or damage the BJP by cutting its vote. Congress will win the seats where our candidates are strong. Where our candidates are slightly weak, they will cut into BJP’s vote share,” she said.
Cautioning voters, Mayawati said if they supported Congress, the BJP would benefit in elections. “People should not waste their vote by supporting Congress. They should support the alliance candidate to ensure BJP’s defeat,” she said.
Hitting out at Modi, Mayawati said the PM was silent against Pakistan for the last five years and was now showing aggression to hide his government’s failures.“It was the BJP government (led by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee) which had released JeM chief Masood Azhar (in 1999 after an Indian Airlines plane hijack). Now they are trying to grab votes in the name of a terrorist. The dual character of BJP leaders should be condemned,” she said.
Mayawati said the BJP and Congress leaders were using the name of BR Ambedkar for votes.
Reacting to Priyanka’s “weak candidate” comment, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said, “I do not believe that the Congress has fielded weak candidates anywhere. No party does it. People are not with them. That is why they are making excuses.”
“There is no difference between the BJP and the Congress. The Congress wants to benefit the BJP,” he said.
