Former MP Atiq Ahmad has twice filed a bail plea one at MP MLA Court and the other at the high court asking for three week bail for canvassing in Varanasi. However, the courts rejected both applications.

Mafiosi-turned-politician and former MP Atiq Ahmad continues to be lodged in Naini Central Jail and has not been shifted to a high security prison in Gujarat, despite a recent Supreme Court order to make the shift. The former MP has filed nomination from Varanasi parliamentary seat against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ahmad is lodged under high security, at circle number 4 of Naini Central Prison and orders to shift him to a high security jail in Gujarat are still to be received, DIG Jails BR Verma said. Once the Gujarat government selects the prison with appropriate security and facilities of video conferencing, the process to shift Ahmad will begin, Verma added.

Although Ahmad has filed the nomination papers from Varanasi parliamentary seat, he has stopped his supporters from canvassing in the constituency.

A supporter claimed on conditions of anonymity that Atiq Ahmad had also decided to withdraw his nomination but the date for withdrawal had passed by then. The fight in Varanasi was tough and without the support of a strong political party, there was no use contesting the polls from there, the supporter added.

In accordance with the Supreme Court’s instructions, the state government has written to the CBI to initiate an enquiry against Ahmad in connection with the abduction of a Lucknowbased realtor Mohit Jaiswal and his torture inside Deoria Jail.
