Lok Sabha elections 2019: With assets worth Rs 147-cr, Gautam Gambhir richest of all Delhi candidates

Cricketer turned politician Gautam Gambhir, with assets worth over Rs 147 crore, turned out to be the richest of all the 349 candidates in the fray for the Lok Sabha election in the national capital.
The former Indian opener, who has been fielded by the BJP from East Delhi constituency, has shown an income of nearly Rs 12.40 crore in the income tax returns filed for 2017-18. His wife Natasha Gambhir showed an income of Rs 6.15 lakh in the income tax returns filed during the same period.
Mahabal Mishra of the Congress, who would be contesting from West Delhi, was the second richest among the BJP and Congress candidates who filed their nominations on Tuesday. His total assets totalled to Rs 45 crore. A scrutiny of the affidavit shows that his assets grew by Rs 12 crore since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Mishra has stated his highest educational qualification as pre-university level.
Vijender Singh, who would be contesting on a Congress ticket from South Delhi, has total assets worth Rs12.14 crore. A professional boxer, Singh who had won a Bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics, a first by an Indian boxer. He holds a BA degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.
Gambhir did his schooling from Modern School,Barakhamba Road, but could not complete his undergraduate course at Hindu College. He is being pitted against former MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress and Atishi of the AAP. Lovely, who also filed his nomination on Tuesday, has total assets to the tune of Rs6.8 crore. Lovely’s assets grew by Rs 2.32 crore since he contested the 2015 Delhi assembly elections.
Sheila Dikshit, former three-time Delhi chief minister, filed her nomination from the North East Delhi parliamentary seat. In her affidavit, she has declared total assets to the tune of Rs 4.92 crore. Her affidavit says she has completed her MA in History from Delhi University. Dikshit’s assets grew by Rs 2.1 crore since she last contested elections in the 2013 assembly polls, and she now owns a car.
Gambhir also owns at least five four-wheelers and one two-wheeler, compared to just one four-wheeler owned by Dikshit. BJP’s sitting MP Ramesh Bidhuri, who would be seeking to retain his South Delhi seat, has three four-wheelers. The total assets of Bidhuri shot up by around Rs 3.2 crore since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He had one car five years ago, but now he owns three.
At least 164 candidates, including all seven candidates of the Congress and three candidates fielded by the BJP, filed their nominations Tuesday. In all, 349 candidates have filed their nominations and are in the fray for Lok sabha polls in the national capital. The last date of filing nominations was April 23 (Tuesday).
