Lok Sabha Elections 2019: High voter turnout as Supriya aims to carry Pawar legacy

Baramati, where Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule is seeking re-election for the third time, saw a turnout of 59.7%, slightly higher than the 58% recorded in 2014.

Sule is locked in a fight against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Kanchan Kul. The seat has traditionally been a stronghold of Pawar, who was elected from the area five times to the Lok Sabha and four times to the assembly. “The BJP’s highpitched campaign and continuous attack on Pawar was part of their strategy to challenge his last bastion,” said Chitra Lele, professor, political science at SNDT university.
