A day after asserting that her party candidates were not cutting into the vote share of SP-BSP-RLD alliance candidates, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday addressed a meeting of Samajwadi Party workers in Rae Bareli to garner support for UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who is seeking re-election from here.
The first such meeting was convened on the instructions of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, said SP Unchahar MLA and former minister Manoj Pandey.
Addressing SP workers, Priyanka said, “We are fighting against those who are trying to weaken the country and the ones who do not listen to people and want to make them weak. Your (SP) support to us in Rae Bareli will weaken these forces (BJP).”
Earlier on Wednesday, Priyanka had asserted that the Congress was fighting 2019 Lok Sabha election to win. “And at places where the Congress organisation was weak, the party was cutting into BJP votes and not that of the SP-BSP-RLD alliance,” she had said evoking a response from the SP and BSP leaders.
“I don’t believe that the Congress has fielded weak candidates on any seat. No party does that. People are not with them and that is why they are making excuses,” Akhilesh was quoted as saying.
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati too had attacked the Congress. Congress general secretary, however, reiterated her remarks that the Congress would do nothing that could benefit the BJP. “I’d rather die than benefit BJP,” she had said while reacting to SP-BSP’s observations about the Congress.
"Ideologies of the Congress and the BJP are poles apart. We will always fight them. They are our main adversary in politics. We have ensured not to benefit BJP in any way in the poll. We are fighting strongly. Our candidates are strong," she told reporters. At her public meetings here Priyanka had been repeatedly invoking late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, calling Rae Bareli her ‘karm bhoomi.’ Insisting that the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had been working for the development of the constituency, she said, “My Dadi remained committed to you. Indiraji has remained your MP. Soniaji too is committed to you. Sonia was hospitalised to undergo treatment... for us this remain holy land. After recovering in hospital the first thing she asked was about the people of Rae Bareli,” said Priyanka.
Priyanka also listed the projects that Sonia had launched in Rae Bareli but had been shelved by the NDA government. “We will re-launch the projects stopped by them,” said Priyanka amid ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ slogans raised by supporters on every mention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Rae Bareli will vote in the fifth phase of general elections on May 6.
