In his first salvo against Congress’ Gurdaspur candidate Sunil Jakhar, Bollywood actor and BJP nominee Sunny Deol on Tuesday said the former is making statements against him just to remain in the election contest.

Cornered by the mediapersons over Jakhar’s repeated remarks against him over his lack of knowledge about the issues concerning the border belt in Punjab, an apparently agitated Deol said, “Jakhar tan bolda rahuga, bolda rahuga, kyunki oh jaanda agar oh nahi bolda tan oh jitu kidaan (Sunil Jakhar will keep on talking as he knows that if he does not speak how will he be in contest ).”

He said this in Gurdaspur town just before starting his poll campaign in the morning.

Later, he held roadshows in the border villages of Pathankot.

Asked about the sarpanch of his ancestral village criticising the Deol family for not doing anything for the village, he said, “My father did many things for the country and I too have joined politics to do something.”

“My intentions are clear and it will help me win. If I am a liar I will be thrown out. They (Congress) failed to curb the menace of drugs in the state.

As part of his roadshow, Sunny Deol visited veteran film star late Dev Anand’s ancestral village Gharota in Gurdsapur district where he was given a rousing reception.

Sanjeev Mahajan, a member of the Dev Anand Fan Club, said people stood in long queues to get a glimpse of Sunny.

“I will fulfil the dreams of late MP Vinod Khanna and the people of this segment, if voted to power,” Sunny said addressing the gathering.

Kishan Chand, an elderly resident, said the village has had long association with Bollywood and with Sunny Deol coming, the bond had grown stronger.

The actor said he would effectively implement schemes meant for youngsters, women and the elderly.
