‘No one has done something so foolish as demonetisation’, says Rahul Gandhi
Congress president Rahul Gandhi hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday over demonetisation and the GST saying no has done something so foolish in 70 years.
“In the past 70 years, no one has done something so foolish like demonetisation and Gabbar Singh Tax (Gandhi’s coinage for the Goods and Services Tax or GST). Modi can’t escape the truth,” he said at an election meeting in Unchahar in Rae Bareli from where UPA chairperson and his mother Sonia Gandhi is seeking reelection to the Lok Sabha.
His remarks came against the backdrop of repeated attacks by the Prime Minister on the Congress, holding it responsible for all the country’s ills since Independence.
He also accused Modi of snatching jobs from the youth of Rae Bareli because his government did not ensure that the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited got the off-set contract in the Rafale aircraft deal with France.
“Modi stopped development at Amethi and Rae Bareily. Job opportunities were snatched from the youth of Rae Bareli. HAL contract for Rafale would have given jobs to the youth of Rae Bareily and Amethi. The chowkidar stole your jobs and don’t forget that.”
He also alleged that work on railway line, railway factory and food park was stopped in Amethi.
Both Rae Bareli from where UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Amethi which is Rahul Gandhi’s original constituency are going to polls on May 6.
Gandhi also accused Modi of not wanting to fill 22 lakh vacant posts in the government despite record levels of unemployment and promised to fill them up if the Congress came to power.
“There are 22 lakh government job vacancies. But the government doesn’t want to fill up the vacancies. Ten lakh youth can be given employment in panchayats. And we will do it.”
The Congress president asked the gathering, “Where is Anil Ambani, Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya, Lalit Modi - in jail or outside?” Charging the prime minister of taking away money from “our pocket, your pocket”, he promised that the Congress will ensure that the people get back their money.
He reiterated that the Congress’ NYAY will boost the economy by increasing the purchasing power of the poor and insisted that the middle class will not be taxed to fund the scheme.
“The middle class will not be taxed for NYAY but we will take out money from thieves live Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi,” he said.
He also alleged a loot under the government’s crop insurance schemes and said farmers did not get adequate compensation for crop damage despite insuring their cultivation.
“The insurance has been given to people like Anil Ambani. You give money for insurance but when you face loss you are not compensated. Rs 10,000 crore have been taken from farmers and given to people like Anil Ambani...”
Gandhi also said a Congress government would bring a law under which no farmer would be jailed for defaulting on loan repayments.
