22-year-old biker dies while trying to escape traffic police in Mumbai

An attempt to evade arrest during a police nakabandi cost a 22-year-old biker -- who was speeding, drunk and not wearing a helmet -- his life at Milan flyover in Vile Parle (East) on Monday.

According to the police, Vile Parle resident Dhanajaykumar Laxman Prasad Gautam, 22, had borrowed a bike from his friend to take his cousin Ramesh Prasad Gautam, 24, to the Juhu beach.

Both of them got drunk during Holi celebrations, said police.

On seeing the police on their way to the beach around 2pm, they took a U-turn from the gap on the bridge.

They started speeding and crashed into the divider, said police.

“Dhananjaykumar, who was not wearing a helmet, succumbed to his head injuries. We are conducting a continuous drive against helmetless driving. All police stations fine at least 100 drivers for the offence every day,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

The pillion rider suffered cuts on lips, abrasions on hands and legs and chest injury. He is out of danger.
