The Bhiwandi police on Tuesday arrested a 50-year-old man for allegedly raping his 26-year-old mentally-challenged neighbour.

The incident took place in Bhiwandi (rural) on Monday.

According to the complaint, which was filed by the survivor’s family, the woman was returning home after finishing her chores when the accused saw her in their neighbourhood. He groped her and forced himself on her. The complainant tried to escape, but he hit her. He raped her and threatened her against telling anybody, said police.

On reaching home, the complainant started crying and told her family members what had happened.

They then took her to the police station and filed a complaint under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“The man has confessed to the crime. We are now awaiting results of the medical tests,” said a police officer.
