71-year-old man dies in accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

A 71-year-old man died after his stationary trailer was hit by a truck on Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Tuesday morning.

According to the police, Shiddheshwar Nikam was driving the trailer from Pune to Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai around 2.30 am. As he was crossing the village, the trailer developed some technical problems.

“Nikam got off his cabin and started repairing something on the rear part of the vehicle. That was when a truck, which was also moving in the same direction, hit the trailer,” said a police officer from Khandeshwar police station.

Nikam suffered severe injuries on his head and other parts of his body in the accident, and died on the spot. A few local residents rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was declared brought dead by the doctors.

The police have arrested the truck driver from the spot. He has been identified as Motif Samsuddin Rehman, 35. He has been booked under sections 279, 337, 304a, 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

“We are no sure if it is a case drink-driving. Our investigations are on,” another police officer said.
