An Andheri-bound suburban local coming from Panvel overshot the platform at Nerul station on the Central Railway (CR) line on Wednesday morning, raising concerns about the safety of suburban commuters.

In the past one month, three incidents of a local train overshooting the platform or a red signal has occurred on the CR’s suburban network.

The Wednesday incident occurred at around 6.30am. Three coaches of the Andheri-bound local overshot the platform before it came to halt. It was held up for 10 to 15 minutes and then started moving ahead.

It is not yet known whether the incident occurred because of poor brakes or if the motorman forgot to stop the train.

A railway official, requesting anonymity, said that a departmental probe has been ordered into the incident.

The passengers on-board of the three coaches faced difficulty in disembarking at Nerul.

Last week, a Titwala-bound local had crossed the red signal (signal passing at danger or SPAD) outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

On May 14, the motorman of a Belapur-bound train overshot the signal near Kurla station and on April 21, this was repeated by a CR local at the Vidyavihar railway station.
