JEE Main results 2018: Cut-offs for JEE Advanced lowered as scores dip

While the JEE Main results have invited mixed reactions from students and experts, most top scorers seemed happy with their marks

The overall cut-off for students who will become eligible for JEE-Advanced has gone down this year as well. As per Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which announced the for JEE-Main on Monday, the cut-off in common rank is 74 as compared to 81 in 2017 and 100 in 2016.

Tathaghat Verma,17, has emerged as the probable Mumbai topper with an All India Rank (AIR) of 34. Nanded resident Parth Lathuria bagged AIR 3. The results were announced on Monday evening.

While the scores have invited mixed reactions from students and experts, most top scorers seemed happy with their marks. Verma, a resident of Powai, was happy to score as per expectations. “What I did not expect was to be amongst the top scorers, so that’s a pleasant surprise,” said Verma, who scored 331 out of 360. Like many other top scorers, Verma also hopes to clear JEE-Advanced and secure a seat in computer science faculty at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B).

All categories —SC, ST, PwD and others — have witnessed a drop in cut-offs when compared to the last few years. “This was expected because all students complained about the level of difficulty and the length of the paper. Many students could not complete the full exam. Scores were bound to be low,” said Vinay Kumar from a city-based coaching institute.

A few believe the overall performance of students from Mumbai is better than the previous year, with higher top scores. “The overall performance of Mumbai is better this year. For most students, this is just a qualifying exam and their real test will be JEE-Advanced, for which I believe students will be better prepared,” said Pravin Tyagi, from another coaching institute.
