MMRDA wants to build control centre for Metro at Aarey Milk Colony

Aarey Colony in Goregaon (East) is one of last remaining green spaces in the city. Any construction activity in the area — such as the state’s proposal to construct a metro car depot for metro-3 corridor has been opposed strongly by residents and environmental activists.

After proposing to set up a labour camp for Metro construction workers at Aarey Milk Colony, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has now proposed to construct a centralised operation control centre for all metro corridors at Aarey Colony.

“We have sent a proposal to the urban development department seeking four acres of land at Aarey Colony to build an operation control centre,” said Pravin Darade, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA. “More importantly, we have located a plot of land where no trees will have to be cut for the centre to be constructed,” he added.

The operation control centre will be designed for safe operation and efficient management of rolling stock, traffic control, supervisory control and data acquisition system and signalling and telecommunication system.

The MMRDA has already sought a two-acre plot to set up a temporary labour camp for the construction workers on metro-7 corridor. An MMRDA official said that the proposal for the labour camp and the control centre are different. “We will need a plot of land for the operation control centre permanently but we need a plot of land temporarily for the labour camp,” the official said.
