In the last two days, officers from Thane crime branch (Unit-1) arrested four people in two separate incidents and seized Rs96 lakh in old notes. The amount and the accused were handed over to the Income-Tax department for further probe.

On Sunday, a driver and two businessmen from Malad and Ghatkopar were arrested after the cops received a tip-off that they were coming to Jambhli Naka to exchange old currency for new. Cops recovered Rs46 lakh from their possession.

In the second arrest, which occurred on Monday afternoon, another businessman from Mumbai was apprehended at Kharegaon toll naka in Kalwa. Cops recovered old currency worth Rs50 lakh from him.

An inspector from Unit-1 said, “In the last two days, we caught four people carrying old notes worth Rs 96 lakh. All four were handover to the I-T department. Investigation is on to trace the source of this currency. More than a dozen people have been arrested for similar crimes of late. Also, we are keeping an eye on those trying to help people exchange old currency for new.”
