Thane rickshaw driver sets sister-in-law on fire, held

The accused killed the victim as she refused to sell her husband’s rickshaw to Shehenshah at a lower rate than the market value

A 35-year-old rickshaw driver was arrested on Sunday from Uttar Pradesh for burning his sister-in-law in Bhiwandi back in April.

The victim died on Friday.

The accused, Shehenshah Maniyar, a rickshaw driver, killed the victim, Parveen Maniyar, as she refused to sell her husband’s rickshaw to Shehenshah at a lower rate than the market value.

On April 18, Shehenshah, had gone to her house to negotiate the selling price of her
husband’s (Ashfakali’s) rickshaw.

“ Parveen and Ashfakali own two rickshaws of which Shehenshah wanted one at a rate lower that the market rate,” said a police officer.

“Soon, Ashfakali left the house for some work, while Parveen and Shehenshah were discussing the selling price of the rickshaw,” he said.

Police said they ended up arguing and Shehenshah got angry. “Later, he slapped Parveen, poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. He remained inside the house till Parveen sustained 70% burns,” said the officer.

“Locals saw fumes coming out of the house and started knocking on the door. When Shehenshah realised that Parveen will die he opened the door and asked for help. He escaped from the spot and went to Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

After being produced in court he was remanded in police custody.

Shehenshah was arrested under section 302 (punishment for murder) of the IPC.
