The injured include Rahul Sitaram Pawar, 24, Santosh Mohan Sanghvi, 24, Ravi Ramdas Bangre, 24, and Ankit Bharat Solanki, 24. All of them work in event management companies.

All the six people were from Wagle estate area in Thane and were drunk at the time of the incident. They were heading from Thane towards Ghodbunder road around 2.30 am when they crashed into the divider, said the police.

“Rahul was at the wheels and was trying to overtake a truck when he lost control of the car. It flipped thrice before crashing onto the divider. A few of us were thrown out of the car due to the impact,” said one of the survivors.

Inspector Nasir Kulkarni from Kasarwadavli police station said, “During the treatment two men died while the others are still critical. We have booked Rahul for rash and drunk driving.”

“Preliminary blood tests confirmed that all of them were drunk,” said senior inspector D Tele from Kasarwadavli police station.

He added, “The car belongs to Rahul and we have seized the car. On examining it, we realised that they were driving extremely fast.” No arrests have been made so far as the police are awaiting reports of more medical tests.

One of the survivors, 24-year-old Ravi Ramdas Bangre said, “We met in late on Wednesday. Rahul got his car and we went to Upvan lake in Vartak nagar and sat there till 2am. Then we decided to go to an eatery on Ghodbunder Road. We were on the road for hardly 15 minutes when the accident occurred.”

He added, “Rahul was trying to overtake a car when he lost control and the car flipped multiple times. Rahul and I were thrown out of the car. Later Ankit managed to get out of the car and sought help from passersby.”

Ravi also said, “Rahul was speeding because the road was vacant but we never thought that it would lead to an accident.”
