The police on Tuesday arrested a 48-year-old engineer posted with public works department (PWD) on charges of alleged attempt of rape on a 10-year-old girl. The victim was found in illegal confinement in his house in Ghaziabad on Monday night.
According to police, they arrested engineer Anil Kumar who is posted with PWD in Meerut and booked him for rape attempt, illegal confinement and criminal intimidation at Modi Nagar police station. “Anil has been arrested and was also produced before the court on Tuesday. The FIR was lodged after family filed a complaint with police,” said Avinash Gautam, officiating station house officer, Modi Nagar.
On Monday evening, the minor girl went missing from outside her house and was later found tied to a chair and confined inside the house of Anil Kumar in neighbourhood after locals launched a search.
“I was standing near the house door. Uncle came and groped my mouth and took me to his house...” the girl said.
“We were searching for her in entire neighbourhood and the accused took her to his house. The neighbours searched everywhere and we were also planning to visit the police station with her photograph when a girl alerted us about my daughter’s whereabouts. The girl climbed the nearby houses and saw my daughter inside the house of the accused. She raised an alarm and locals broke the wall of his house and rescued the girl,” the girl’s father said.
The locals also ransacked Anil’s house out of anger and later handed him over to police. During the incident, the family of the accused had gone out of the house to witness the ongoing Kanwar Yatra which passes through Modi Nagar.
