French pistol shooter Celine Goberville beat Yuemei Lin and Mengxue Zhang of China to clinch the gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event of the ISSF World Cup Final at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Ranges in New Delhi on Wednesday. Rio Olympic champion Anna Korakaki from Greece, who was off colour throughout the day, finished fifth in the event.
Of the eight shooters in the final, the race for gold was between Goberville and the two Chinese shooters Zhang and Lin.
In the final, the French shooter raced ahead from the first shot and didn’t relinquish the lead despite the added pressure of firing some bad shots. Goberville was relatively steadier than her two rivals and won with a score of 240.9.
Lin shot 237.0 for silver medal, while Zhang, who topped the qualification with a score of 391, got bronze with a total of 218.7.
Olympic champion Korakaki, who qualified for the final in third spot with a score of 383, wasn’t at her best during the medal round. She trailed at the bottom of the field in the initial stages, and moved to sixth place as the round progressed, eventually finishing fifth with a score of 177.5.
Meanwhile, Kimberly Rhode of the US beat Diana Bacosi of Italy 22-21 in a shoot-off to win gold in the women’s skeet event. It was a close final and the scores remained tied at 56 in the 60-shot match.
