A mob thrashed a 40-year-old woman, believed to be mentally disturbed, in Nalanda town of south-central Bihar on Wednesday on the suspicion that she had abducted a child.

The mob also tore the woman’s clothes in the presence of a large number of onlookers who remained mute spectators to the brutal act. Confirming the incident, Nalanda SP Nishant Tiwary said a mob had beaten up the woman merely on the basis of rumors that she had stolen a child.

“The victim is unable to state her name because she is mentally unsound. We have lodged a case at the Biharsharif police station against unknown persons in this connection,” he said.
