A video clip of an old woman buried neck-deep in the earth allegedly by her grandson in Bihar’s Darbhanga district and asking him to spare her is being widely shared on social media.

The woman has been identified as Amlesh Devi, a widow in her late 60s from Samadhpura village under Baheri police station, nearly 30km south of the district headquarters.
Devi is seen pleading in the video that she will “not to do this again” and a voice in the background, apparently that of her grandson Sandip Singh’s, warns her she would not be spared.
Some villagers said the woman, the widow of Siya Ram Singh, is mentally unstable and often wanders off without informing her family. Her son Shankar Singh died some time ago.
The village headman Chandrashekhar Singh defended the family on Sunday, saying it was an old video released by the cousins of woman’s grandson due to a dispute in the family over a piece of land. The video was shot when her husband was alive, he added.
Station house officer of Baheri police station Sanjay Kumar, on the other hand, said the video was posted on social media on October 4.

Human rights activist Rohit Kumar Singh said the elderly woman’s family was illiterate and some people from the neighbourhood provoked them to bury her to control her waywardness.
