Aishwarya Rai attended the trailer launch event of Ponniyin Selvan in Chennai on Tuesday evening. The actor was dressed in black ethnic wear. Aishwarya greeted director Mani Ratnam with a hug and he patted her back. Aishwarya also touched Rajinikanth's feet before he pulled her up and gave her a hug. In the film, Aishwarya will be seen in dual roles --one of queen Nandini, the princess of Pazhuvoor, and the other of Mandakini Devi.

Rajinikanth also attended the event and recalled his conversation with Mani Ratnam. He said, “I wanted to be a part of Ponniyin Selvan. Asked Mani to give me Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar. I said I'll do a special appearance. Mani asked me 'do you want me to get bashed by your fans?' Anyone else would have agreed, but Mani didn't. That's Mani Ratnam."

Kamal Haasan who also was part of the event revealed that he too wanted to make Ponniyin Selvan. “When I got the rights of Ponniyin Selvan, Sivaji also said that Rajinikanth would be perfect for Vandhiyathevan. I asked him 'what about me?', Sivaji said 'you be Aditya Karikalan'.”

Aditi Rao Hydari also attended the event in Chennai. She draped a pink and golden saree and accessorised with jewellery. Ponniyin Selvan is a cinematic adaptation of author Kalki Krishnamurthy's Tamil novel of the same name.
