Increasing number of vehicles on city roads have inturn risen the air pollutant levels across Pune. This increasing air pollution could become one of the major health concerns for Puneites in the near future if the present scenario continues. Jui Dharwadkar talks to environmentalist Vishwambhar Choudhari about what can be done to prevent air pollution
What do you think is the major cause of air pollution in the city?
Presently, the major cause of air pollution is the rising number of vehicles on city roads. Combustion of fuels like petrol or diesel is the main cause of rising levels of Nitrogen Oxides, Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide. Also, with traffic congestion the pollutants do not get dispersed, which is a major concern.
The recent environment status report by the Pune Municipal Corporation shows that the particulate matter in the air is also rising. What do you think is the reason for this?
There are various reasons for rise in particulate matter including construction activities and transport of various goods among other things. Rise in vehicles also accounts for this growth as dust particles do not settle down.
What are the effects of rising air pollution?
Air pollution is definitely a health hazard for people. It also affects the vegetation in the surroundings. With rising air pollution, many species of birds and animals also get adversely affected by this. It was observed that during the monsoon this year, not many frogs were visible. Hence all kinds of pollution, along with habitat destruction, is affecting the flora and fauna around us and is also affecting our health.
How serious is air pollution in Pune?
In Pune, we can see that pollutants sometimes get accumulated in the air and do not disperse very quickly, mostly during November and December. Otherwise, the wind velocity in the city is good and the pollutants usually do not get accumulated for long. But growing air pollution is definitely a health issue for all and must be addressed at the earliest.
What can be done to prevent the rising air pollution?
To prevent air pollution, firstly the number of vehicles on the streets must be reduced. Also, there is a need to shift to more cleaner fuels like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) .
