Man attacks Pune doctor for refusing to terminate girlfriend’s 5-month-old pregnancy

A gynaecologist from Pune was attacked on Saturday night by two unidentified men after he refused to perform a medical termination of pregnancy on a woman five-months pregnant.

The woman is in a relationship with one of the attackers, the police said.

A case under Section 324, 341, 506 and 34 was registered at Sanghavi police station on Sunday morning, according to assistant police inspector Balbhim Nanavare.

"Whether to book the two under Section 307 (for attempted murder) or not, will be decided by senior officers," API Nanavare said. To protest against the incident, medical shops from Pimpri-Chinchwad observed bandh on Sunday.

Abortion after 20 weeks (5 months) of pregnancy is not allowed under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act (MTP), unless the mother's life is in danger.

“The girl was around 18-20-years old and had visited me with one of the attackers some 20 days ago. I tried to find her name being registered in the medical files, but it is difficult to trace the entry and verify her identity,” Dr Bidkar told Hindustan Times.

The doctor also claimed that a phone number that one of the two men gave him was wrong.
