Southwest Monsoon advances, rainfall forecast for Pune in next 24 hours

Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karnataka received rainfall during the past 24 hours.

The southwest monsoon has advanced into the south Andaman sea, some parts of the south Bay of Bengal and the Nicobar Islands on Friday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) .

While Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu,  Puducherry and Karnataka saw the skies open up, heat-wave conditions are very likely to persist over parts of northwest and central India for next the 3­4 days. (REUTERS)

"Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall occurred over Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karnataka during the past 24 hours. One or two places in Lakshadweep and Kerala received heavy rainfall. Minicoy in Lakshadweep received 76.7 mm rainfall while in Kerala, Vellanikkara received 80.3 mm rainfall,” said a statement released by IMD.

It added that conditions are very likely to become favourable for further advance of southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Arabian sea, Lakshadweep, Comorin area, south Kerala, south Tamil Nadu, some more parts of Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Andaman sea and some parts of east-central Bay of Bengal, during the subsequent 48 hours.

IMD has also stated that heat-wave conditions are very likely to persist over parts of northwest and central India during next the 3­4 days.

As per predictions released by IMD, Pune is likely to experience cloudy weather and light rainfall in the coming 24 hours, while a few other pockets of the state, including parts of Vidarbha, could experience heatwave conditions in the next 24 hours.
