The incident comes at a time when the Punjab government and its police department have come under sharp attack over deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
Gurwinder Singh, 30, a resident of Baba Deep Singh Nagar here, was posted at Nehianwala police station. His body was found on a road near the Mehma Sarja village. As per police, the victim had a bullet injury on his neck.
After the crime, the accused tried to flee in the constable’s car but met with an accident. Later, they snatched a vehicle at gunpoint and escaped.
Bathinda senior superintendent of police (SSP) Swapan Sharma said the preliminary investigation has revealed that the attack is fallout of some dispute over money. However, some foils used for drugs intake have been recovered from the constable’s car. After the attack, police rounded up a suspect who was in a drugged state. Cops are waiting for him to regain consciousness. All angles are being probed, said the SSP. A barrel of 12 bore rifle was also recovered from the car.
The SSP said it was Gurwinder’s day off. According to his wife, the constable had gone out with their neighbour Daljit Singh.
“The constable’s car in which accused, believed to be two, were fleeing met with an accident. When a local mechanic, identified as Pawan, tried to help them, the latter shooed him away. Later, one of the accused stopped a car (HR 08 5867) at gunpoint and fled away in it, while the other one ran towards the Goniana Kalan village,” said the SSP, adding that police have cordoned off the village and started a search operation.
The snatched car belongs to Jasvir Singh, a resident of Romana Ajit Singh village. The SSP said a murder case has been registered against unknown persons. Gurwinder’s neighbour is being quizzed.
