Punjab: Former captain of Indian women's hockey team among four killed in road accident

With 29 deaths and over 100 serious injuries in a period of only 21 days of June month has made Ropar-Nawanshahr-Phagwara a virtually slaughter stretch for the passengers. However, the traffic police and the state transport department are still to wake up from its slumber, with no effort being made from both to save the human lives.

The killer stretch of Ropar-Nawanshahr-Phagwara of National Highway 344-A has claimed four more lives on Sunday, including former Indian women hockey team captain and coach Shashi Bala (45) her son Agrim Thakur (17), car driver Attar Singh (35) and Jiwan Lal (15) who died in road accident after Alto car in which they were travelling collided with Tata Ace in Kahma village on Sunday morning.

Bala’s daughter Varnika Thakur (23) also sustained serious injuries in this road and admitted in Raja Hospital of the city.

Three persons travelling on two Tata Ace including Santokh Singh, lovedeep and Amrik Singh were injured in this accident and undergoing treatment in the same hospital.

In this month, as many as 25 persons have lost their lives on this stretch in road accidents.

Major accidents on Ropar-Nawanshahr-Phagwara stretch in 2015

Four killed in car-roadways bus collision at Kathgarh town of Nawanshahr district on June 13.

The death rate per accident that took place on National Highway 344-A is as high as 88 percent as 605 people have died in 689 road accidents in the past five years on this 82-km double lane stretch.
