The district administration is planning to spend Rs 1.20 crore on streamlining the vehicular traffic on the city roads. Members of the road safety body organised a meeting in this regard at the mini-secretariat in Patiala on Friday.
Chairing the meeting, assistant commissioner Suba Singh said the administration has prepared a detailed plan for the better and smooth management of traffic across city. “Police have already been directed to ensure strict implementation of the traffic rules. Under the project, traffic lights across district will be changed and made fully-operational,” Singh said.
He added that the traffic police have been directed to restrict entry of any heavy vehicles in the periphery of Patiala municipal corporation (MC) jurisdiction during the day time.
“The departments concerned have also been instructed to remove encroachments from the roadsides across city,” he said.
Many parts of the city, especially roadsides and footpaths, have been encroached upon by shopkeepers and vendors, causing troubles for the commuters and pedestrians.
Meanwhile, superintendent of police (SP traffic) Amarjit Singh Ghuma said that the police have prepared a traffic-related map and have discussed the same with the municipal corporation so as to make arrangements to lessen the traffic chaos on the roads of the Royal City, which is also the home bastion of Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

Rs 23 lakh for tackling stray cattle menace
Coming out of the slumber, the Patiala municipal corporation has made a plan to tackle with the stray cattle menace in the city.
People alleged that the municipal corporation and the district administration have both failed to take a serious note of the stray cattle menace in the city. The presence of 150 dairies within the city limits is also the main reason behind frequent choking of sewers and resultant waterlogging in different parts of Patiala, the residents added.
Both have hardly taken any stringent steps to deal with the issue, claim residents. They have been complaining since long that stray cattle have disrupted the free flow of traffic and at times cause accidents, which many-a-times prove to be fatal.
Meetings were conducted with officials concerned of different departments as the project for sterilisation of dogs will soon be started, while the gaushalas across the MC jurisdiction have been asked to create space for accommodating more animals.
