Sekhar Kammula’s Fidaa is rocking the box-office and how. According to trade pundits, the film has turned out to be the first non-star blockbuster of 2017 in Tollywood. This year so far has been great for star-studded films such as Baahubali 2, Khaidi No 150, Duvvada Jagannadham and Gautamiputra Satakarni. Success of Fidaa is quite unexpected, especially in the US, where it has become the seventh Tollywood film to join the US$2 million (Rs 12.81 crore) club after Baahubali, Srimanthudu, Naanaku Prematho, A…Aa, Khaidi No 150 and Baahubali 2.
The film has ended up as the biggest grosser for Kammula and hero Varun Tej, who couldn’t deliver such a big success even when he worked with well-known filmmakers such as Srinu Vaitla, known for churning out blockbusters. Known for his clean films that have substantial roles for women and can be watched by all sections of the audience, Kammula’s Fidaa struck a chord with the masses and debutante Sai Pallavi deserves special credit for it. Pallavi single-handedly won over audiences and critics with her terrific performance of a Telangana girl and majority credited her for holding the movie together. The film has music by Mickey J Meyer and it’s the love-hate-love story of an NRI doctor, played by Varun, falling head over heels for Pallavi.
The film has grossed over Rs 50 crore at the ticket window worldwide. In his most romantic avatar yet, Varun Tej found acceptance from audiences. On working with Kammula, he had told Hindustan Times, “He is very different from all the directors I have worked with. I know each filmmaker has a style of working but Sekhar enjoys the process more than anyone else. I really don’t know why he took so long to make this film. I like movies where everything is dealt naturally and with a sense of realism. Sekhar’s work stands testimonial to that kind of cinema. He doesn’t like to go overboard for the sake of satisfying a section of the audiences. His style of working is very subtle and natural.”
