Which social media platform is most popular among US teens? Research reveals

The Pew Research survey report released on August 10 said a growing percentage of American teenagers said they use Instagram and Snapchat since the 2014-15 survey. Microblogging site Twitter and Tumblr witnessed decline in shares of teens who said they were using the platforms.

Video content platform TikTok is among the top social media platform for American teens while the popularity of Facebook has fallen, a new survey by Pew Research has said.

The survey of American teenagers between ages 13 and 17 found that 67 per cent of them said they use TikTok and 16 per cent of all the teens said they used it almost constantly. On the other hand, the share of teenagers who said they use Facebook has now fallen from 71 per cent in 2014-15 to 32 per cent today.

The survey also found that video streaming platform YouTube topped the 2022 teen online landscape, with 95 per cent of teens using it. Next on the list of platforms is TikTok that featured in the survey with 67 per cent of teens voting for it. Instagram and Snapchat are being used by six out of ten teenagers. Later on the list were Facebook (32%) along with Twitter, Twitch, WhatsApp, Reddit and Tumblr.

According to the report, teenage boys are more likely to say they use YouTube, Twitch and Reddit than their female counterparts. The American teen girls are more likely than the boys to use TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram.

According to the report, 35 per cent of the teens said they use at least one of YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook almost constantly. The users of TikTok and Snapchat are particularly engaged with these platforms and are closely followed by teens who use YouTube.

A quarter of teens who use Snapchat or TikTok said they use these apps almost constantly and fifth of every teen YouTube users said the same. 19 per cent of overall teens said they use YouTube almost constantly while 16 per cent of these said about TikTok and 15 per cent about Snapchat.

At least 55 per cent of US teens said they spend about right amount of time on these apps and sites while 36 per cent of them said they spent too much time on social media. The remaining eight per cent said they spend too little time on these platforms.
