A UNESCO World Heritage tag can put a historic monument, ancient city or natural landscape on the global map, attracting visitors and renewed attention to its past. But the recognition is about more than tourism. It also brings responsibilities for the country concerned, including protecting the site's heritage, managing its conservation and preserving the features that made it internationally significant.

What UNESCO World Heritage status actually means

According to UNESCO's World Heritage Centre, a site must demonstrate Outstanding Universal Value and meet at least one of ten selection criteria to qualify for the list. These criteria cover cultural and natural heritage, including architectural achievements, important historical traditions, exceptional landscapes and significant ecological processes.

The designation does not transfer ownership of a site to UNESCO. According to UNESCO's guidance on site ownership, the property remains under the ownership of the country where it is located. The country is primarily responsible for its protection and preservation.

Does a UNESCO tag bring more tourists and funding?

However, the tag does not guarantee an immediate tourism boom or automatic financial assistance. According to UNESCO's World Heritage Fund guidelines, eligible countries can seek assistance for conservation, management and emergency protection. Funding depends on the application and the needs of the site.

Tourism also needs careful management. More visitors can put pressure on fragile monuments, historic neighbourhoods and natural habitats. Poorly managed development may damage the very features that earned a place its World Heritage status.

What happens if a site is not protected?

World Heritage status comes with an ongoing responsibility to preserve the site's internationally recognised value. Countries are expected to monitor its condition and take measures to address threats.

If a site faces serious and specific dangers, the World Heritage Committee can place it on the List of World Heritage in Danger. This highlights the risks and encourages corrective action. In extreme cases, a site can lose its World Heritage status if it loses the characteristics that justified its inscription.

UNESCO World Heritage status is more than an honour. It means protecting a site's heritage for future generations while managing tourism and development responsibly.
