At 40, Hungary’s Kiraly becomes the oldest footballer to play in Euro

Hungary’s 40-year-old goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly became the oldest player to feature at the European Championship when he was named in the starting line-up for Tuesday’s Group F match against Austria in Bordeaux.

Kiraly, famous for wearing tracksuit trousers on the pitch, will eclipse the previous record held by Germany’s Lothar Matthaus who was 39 years and 91 days old when he appeared against Portugal at Euro 2000.

Leicester City full-back Christian Fuchs captains an Austrian side that includes Bayern Munich star David Alaba in midfield, with Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic on the right wing.

Austria are making just their second appearance at the tournament, having co-hosted the 2008 edition, while Hungary are playing at a major finals for the first time since the 1986 World Cup.
