German authorities thwarted a suspected terror plot targeting a Christmas market, arresting five men as security remains tight during the festive season. Investigators say the alleged plan involved using a vehicle to ram into crowds, with officials citing a suspected “Islamist motive”. Police detained an Egyptian, three Moroccans and a Syrian in connection with the suspected plot in Bavaria. The development comes a year after a deadly car ramming attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg that killed six people and wounded three hundred. The attack sparked nationwide debate over market security, forcing some cities to cancel events, while others approved markets under heightened scrutiny.
