Army veterans split as Amar Jawan Jyoti gets merged; 'Historic' vs ‘Destruction’

Published on Jan 21, 2022 08:01 pm IST

  • 49 years after it was first lit, the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate has now been merged with the Eternal Flame at the National War Memorial. A short military ceremony was conducted to take the flame from Amar Jawan Jyoti to the National war memorial which is 400 metres away on the other side of India Gate. The Amar Jawan Jyoti was constructed as a memorial for jawans killed in action in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. It was inaugurated by then prime minister Indira Gandhi on January 26, 1971. The National War Memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25, 2019. The names of nearly 26,000 Indian soldiers are inscribed here. Army veterans, however, are divided on the move. While some supported the Modi government and lauded it for the merger, others called out and claimed that the move was nothing less of fake patriotism. Watch for more details.
