‘Hard-won gains at risk’: WHO sounds alarm as Delta drives Covid surge

• WHO chief Dr Tedros warned against more Covid Variants of Concern (VoC) in near future. Dr Tedros said the total number of cases is expected to cross 200 million in two weeks. He, however, added that the world has all the tools it needs to end the pandemic. “We have all the tools we need to end the Covid-19 pandemic. Cases continued to rise, 4 million cases reported last week. We expect the number of cases to cross 200 million in two weeks. Infections increased by 80% or nearly doubled over the last 4 weeks. Much of this increase is driven by the highly-transmissible Delta variant. The variant has now been detected in at least 132 countries,” he said. “Covid-19 virus has been changing since it was first reported. So far, 4 variants of concern have emerged & there will be more, “ he added.
