Hungarian officials briefed the government on the latest European Union summit, where debates focused heavily on EU financial support for Ukraine and broader policy direction. Hungary reiterated its opposition to joint EU war loans, arguing that financing conflict undermines Europe’s economic stability and long-term interests. Budapest said it would stay out of the loan scheme alongside a small group of member states, while calling for stronger support for peace initiatives led by the United States. The government also criticised plans reportedly discussed within NATO regarding potential troop deployments to Ukraine. Separately, Hungary rejected the EU decision to end Russian gas purchases by 2027, calling it a sanctions measure that requires unanimity, and confirmed it is challenging the move through legal channels amid ongoing disputes with Brussels.
