EU credibility panic? MEPs slam Brussels’ inaction, demand trade ban on Israeli settlements

The European Union is facing renewed criticism over its response to Israeli settlement trade, with Members of the European Parliament accusing Brussels of political inaction and a lack of courage. During a debate on November 5, lawmakers urged the European Commission to propose a binding ban on trade in goods originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. MEPs including trade committee chair Bernd Lange questioned why the Commission was waiting for agreement among member states before presenting legislation. EU officials, however, say divisions over the legal basis and lack of Council support have stalled action. The dispute is raising fresh questions over the bloc’s credibility and consistency on international law.
