Cornering China: India, USA, Japan, Australia hold Quad meet amid LAC tension

As tension between India and China continues to persist along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Quad grouping took place in Japan. Tokyo hosted the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue involving India, United States of America, Australia, and Japan. The Quad is seen as a counterweight to China. Indian minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar's remarks at the meeting were seen as veiled jibes at Beijing. He said that India is committed to upholding a rules-based international order underpinned by respect for territorial integrity, rule of law, and peaceful dispute resolution among other features. China is currently at loggerheads with every member of the Quad. The USA is in a trade tussle with Beijing while tension is also rising over Chinese expansion bids in the South China Sea. Japan is worried about Chinese activity near Senkaku Island, while Australia has pledged to halt Belt and Road Initiative work, which is a pet project of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
